On wardrobe, location, and showing up exactly as you are.
If you’ve been sitting on your phone scrolling maternity session photos and feeling equal parts inspired and completely overwhelmed, this one is for you.
You’re growing a person. That’s a big deal. And somewhere in between the doctor appointments, the nesting, and the midnight snack runs, you’re also supposed to figure out what to wear for photos. No pressure.
Here’s the truth: the moms who walk away with images they love aren’t the ones who had the most Pinterest-perfect plan. They’re the ones who showed up, trusted the process, and wore something that let their bump be the whole story.
This session at Washington Park in Macon is a perfect example of exactly that.
Why Washington Park Works So Well
Washington Park in Macon has this quality that’s hard to manufacture, it feels both elevated and completely unpretentious. Old stone walls, layers of green, garden paths that wind into something that looks like it belongs in a travel magazine. In spring especially, it comes alive in a way that makes every frame feel effortless.
For maternity sessions, location matters more than most people realize. The background should support the subject, not compete with it. Washington Park gives us depth and texture without ever pulling focus away from mom. The lush greenery frames her naturally. The light filters in just right. It’s one of those places where the setting does half the work for us.

What to Wear for Your Maternity Session(3 Tips That Actually Help)
Let me be straight with you: wardrobe is one of the things that makes or breaks a maternity gallery. Not because you need to look a certain way , but because the right choices let your bump take center stage, and the wrong ones quietly work against you.
Here’s what I walk every client through before we shoot.
THE WARDROBE
01. Let the bump lead — neutrals and jewel tones over everything.
Bright colors and loud patterns are attention magnets. And in a maternity session, there’s only one thing that should be getting all the attention. Neutrals ,cream, sage, dusty rose, mocha, warm white , work beautifully against almost any backdrop and photograph gorgeously against every skin tone. Jewel tones like deep teal, forest green, or burgundy add richness without fighting the scene. They feel elevated without trying too hard.
The sage green gown in this session? A perfect example. It complemented the Washington Park greenery, looked stunning against this client’s complexion, and kept every single eye exactly where they belonged: on her and that bump.
Neutrals and jewel tones work with every background. Bright colors compete. Let the bump be the statement.
“The right color doesn’t just photograph well, it steps aside and lets you be the whole picture.”
02. The undergarments matter more than you think
Nobody talks about this enough, and they should. What you wear underneath affects how everything sits, how comfortable you feel, and how your outfit photographs when the fabric moves.
For a maternity session, come prepared: a strapless bra so nothing peeks out of off-shoulder styles, seamless nude underwear that won’t show through lighter fabrics, and a stretchy waistband or nothing at all under a fitted gown so there’s no digging in. You want to feel supported without being restricted. Comfort and confidence are directly connected, and the camera picks up both.
03. If you want intimate images, bring the right lace.
A lot of expecting moms are curious about partially nude maternity images and aren’t sure how to approach it. Here’s my honest take: some of the most breathtaking maternity photographs come from these moments, and lace is almost always involved.
Lace texture photographs beautifully, it’s delicate, it catches light softly, and it manages to feel both intimate and tasteful at the same time. My go-to recommendation: pack a lace bralette, a pair of nude underwear, and both black and white options so we have flexibility depending on what the light is doing that day. You don’t have to use all of it. But having it means we have options, and options make for better galleries.
On Embracing the Bump Fully
I’ve worked with moms who walked into a session nervous about how they looked — not feeling like themselves, unsure how to hold their body, hoping I could somehow minimize what pregnancy had done. And then I’ve watched those same moms look at their gallery and cry. Not because I fixed anything. Because they saw it for what it actually was.
Your bump is not a problem to solve. It’s the whole point. The roundness, the heaviness, the way your body has completely rearranged itself to make room for another person that’s the story. Wear things that celebrate it, not camouflage it. Fitted gowns, wrap styles, soft fabrics that move with you. Let it be seen. This family at Washington Park understood that completely and decided to show up for the moment instead of hide from it.
