She was a first-time mama with a woodland-inspired nursery in the works and a general sense of what she wanted her maternity session to feel like. Something outdoorsy. Lush. A little different from what you see everywhere else.
What she didn’t have figured out yet was the wardrobe. And honestly, that turned out to be the most interesting part of the whole planning process.
Three Dresses Before We Got It Right
Wardrobe is the thing most mamas stress about the most before a maternity session, and honestly, it’s the thing I spend the most time on in the planning process too. What you wear affects everything ,the color palette, the mood of the images, how you carry yourself on camera. It’s worth getting right.
This mama came to the session with options, which I always recommend. The first dress was too casual ,it photographed fine on its own but it didn’t match the elevated, nature-forward feel she was going for. It would have looked out of place against the architecture of Massee Lane. The second dress had the right vibe but was too sheer for an outdoor session. Not something she would have felt comfortable in, and comfort shows up in photos whether you intend it to or not.
The third one was the blue fitted gown you see in all of these images, and it was immediately right. Fitted through the body so it showed her bump beautifully. A soft, muted blue that photographed as its own thing without washing out or blending into the background.
A few things that generally work well for outdoor maternity sessions in Middle Georgia: solid colors over busy prints, fabrics with some weight and structure, and colors in the warm or muted family, dusty blues, sage greens, creams, rust tones. Avoid anything too bright or too dark, and skip white if you’re shooting in full sun. It blows out fast.
If you’re not sure what to wear, that’s completely normal and it’s exactly what our planning process is for. Every session includes a style guidance document that walks you through what works for your specific location, season, and the look you’re going for. We’ll go through your options together before the session so you’re not showing up and figuring it out on the spot. You won’t be standing in a garden holding three dresses trying to decide on your own.
Why We Chose Massee Lane Gardens in Fort Valley
If you’ve never been to Massee Lane Gardens, it’s one of those places that’s been right there the whole time and most people in Middle Georgia have never actually visited. It’s the home of the American Camellia Society in Fort Valley, and the grounds are genuinely beautiful , stone water features, old trees, winding paths, garden beds, wooden structures tucked into the greenery. It has this secret garden quality that you can’t really manufacture anywhere else.
For maternity sessions, it’s a really good fit. There are enough different spots within the property that you get real variety in a single session without driving anywhere. And it’s quiet, which sounds like a small thing but genuinely changes how relaxed everyone feels on camera.
In terms of timing, spring and fall are the strongest seasons to shoot at Massee Lane. Spring brings a lot of blooms and that fresh, lush green that photographs beautifully. Fall softens the light and adds some warmth to the tones. Summer is workable but the heat is real, so we schedule early morning and work fast. Winter is honestly underrated , the bare branches and muted tones can look really elegant depending on the wardrobe.
The stone water feature areas are some of the most versatile spots on the property. You get texture, depth, and a background that feels established without being distracting. The more open garden bed sections work well for full-length shots where you want the dress to be the focal point. The canopy areas give you that dappled, filtered light that is hard to replicate anywhere else in Middle Georgia.
Massee Lane is about an hour from Warner Robins and just under an hour from Macon. It’s worth the drive. For a mama who wanted a woodland-inspired session that felt intentional and a little different, it was the obvious answer.
How the Session Came Together
Her partner was there for the session, and having him in the mix changed the whole feel of it. Some of my favorite frames from the day are the two of them together, quiet moments, a hand on her belly, the way they looked at each other when they didn’t think I was watching. That’s the stuff you can’t plan for.
We moved through a few different spots on the property, the stone water feature area, the more open garden beds, the heavier canopy sections. By the time we hit the second location she had completely settled in, which is how it almost always goes. The first few minutes are the stiffest. After that it just flows.
What to Expect When You Book a Maternity Session
Before we ever show up on location, we’ve already done the planning work together. We talk through your vision, work through wardrobe options, yes, sometimes more than once figure out your color palette, and decide on the location that makes the most sense for what you’re going for. I send you a style guide. We nail down timing based on the light.
On the day of the session, I guide you and your partner through everything. Where to stand, how to move, what to do with your hands. You don’t have to figure any of that out on your own.
Sessions are scheduled around golden hour, either the first hour after sunrise, or an hour before sunset. Massee Lane is about an hour from Warner Robins, which makes it an easy same-day trip.

Is This the Right Session for You?
If you have a general direction in mind but haven’t figured out every detail yet, that’s fine. That’s what the planning process is for. We’ll work through it together, the location, the wardrobe, all of it, before we ever pick up a camera. Massee Lane works really well for sessions with a nature-inspired or woodland feel. But if it’s not the right fit for what you’re picturing, we’ll find what is.
